The wonder is that we can see the trees and not wonder more.
    -Ralph Waldo Emerson

    Greetings,

Speaking of trees, NOW is the time to gather brown needles that have fallen from pine trees. Everywhere (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), pine trees are shedding blankets of needles. The current abundance of beautiful, freshly shed pine needles could provide enough to supply you throughout the entire year. So grab a bag, start trespassing and tell any curious bystanders that you're a basketweaver. Good luck with that, better yet take a basket to show the skeptics what you make out of those needles!

At the bottom of this newsletter is my updated class schedule for the rest of the year. Hopefully you can make it to one of my classes. If you have any questions, just contact me at lovetoweave@cox.net

Hope everyone has been enjoying their Summer. I've spent mine preparing for my next DVD - YES, there will be another one. When I completed "Basketweaving Essentials with Nadine Spier" I was so relieved to have completed that major project and cross it off my "to do" list. But alas, I've had so many requests for another DVD that I realize I need to do another one. My next DVD will be for advanced students and will feature sculptural work. The information in it will build upon the skills taught in my first DVD, so for those of you who have it and have been practicing, you'll be ready for DVD #2. I've been working diligently on weaving samples and will be filming at the end of the year.

A huge thank you to everyone who has taken the time to write me with your enthusiastic comments about my first DVD. I'm so pleased with the feedback I'm receiving.

Also this month the National Basketry Organization (NBO) published a wonderful review in it's magazine!

I recently went to see a short film "Hubble" at the Ruben H Fleet Space Theatre in Balboa Park . The movie was narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. The Hubble Telescope was launched in 1990 and has had repairs and improvements on several occasions to improve its range of exploration.

As my husband and I watched the incredible images I couldn't stop the tears from streaming down my face. I quietly snuffled in a Kleenex so nearby people wouldn't think I was a real wuss. I was completely overwhelmed by the extraordinary images of far away galaxies and stars being born. We were actually witnessing the passing of time - millions of light years away. It was riveting, breathtaking, absolutely gorgeous - more beautiful than any painting could possibly be. There was even a "star nursery" where baby stars, in their embryonic form, look like tadpoles drifting in space. Little polliwogs waiting for their transformation to become "adult" stars. The stellar images are too magnificent for my limited vocabulary to describe. I sat there wondering if this is the realm of Angels. What place could be more astonishing and magical for them to inhabit? The awe, rapture and beauty I felt while watching the movie has lit up something inside me. It was a spiritual experience.

    Blessings,
    Nadine

The Art of Native American Basketry: A Living Tradition

    Through November 7
Autry National Center of the American West
This is a comprehensive exhibition presented by the Autry National Center. Baskets from more than 100 cultures, arranged in eleven geographic regions, will be shown in this selection of artworks from the world's largest collection of Native American baskets.

More than 250 objects will be on view, ranging in size from small Pomo feather baskets made for sale to tourists, to massive Apache olla baskets used for storing large quantities of seeds.

Because the works shown have been selected from a remarkably wide-ranging and distinguished collection, visitors will be able to see how the materials, techniques, and designs of the baskets vary from region to region, reflecting different physical environments and traditions.

    Beginning Pine Needle Basketry

Learn how to coil a beautiful basket around a polished stone. The stones are an easy way to start a basket and also make an ornate center. Students will learn how to weave so the “swirling” stitches are identical on both sides of the basket. The coiling technique can be used to weave virtually any plant in your yard. Pine needles & waxed linen thread provided. Basketry is a great way to channel stress and recycle from nature! Repeat students are invited to attend to learn more advanced techniques if you don’t mind waiting until after I get the beginners started!

    Intermediate Pine Needle Basketry
    Private Workshops at Nadine's Home

The home workshops are kept small and everyone gets plenty of individualized attention. Whatever you come to learn, whether its fancier stitches, how to put beads between coils, improve shaping, different ways to start baskets such as walnut slices, teneriffe, traditional starts, and more, I will tailor my instruction specifically for you! Since enrollment is kept small early registration is recommended. Feel free to come with your own supplies or a started basket. (Location - Encinitas area)

    Fresh Lavender Wreaths

Classes will resume in the Spring.

    Gourd Decorating / Woodburning

Students will choose a gourd from a large selection and learn how to safely clean, carve and prepare gourds, then how to woodburn (tool provided) designs, texture and shade, plus basketweaving around the rim (choose from a variety of plant materials) and embellishment using glass beads, feathers, pods and shells.

    Handwoven Lavender Sachets

You'll learn how to warp a tiny hand-held loom and weave a small piece of fabric, remove it from the loom, and fill with freshly dried organic lavender and stitch it closed. A variety of embellishments will be provided for decoration. You'll also learn how to dry your own garden-grown lavender and how to strip the buds to make your own potpourri.

These little fragrant sachets are great to inhale during stressful moments, or for your linen drawers, or gifts for friends and loved ones. Great travelling project - the loom can easily fit in your purse. The fabric can also be used for lavender lapel pins, pin cushions, and Ipod necklace holders.
Class includes Weavette Loom for students to keep, instruction book, 2 needles, dried organic lavender, yarns, and embellishments.

These delightful Facial Sachets release the soft herbal fragrance as you use them and leave your skin feeling fresh and clean.
Students will make approximately 30 sachets. They make wonderful gifts for friends and co-workers, but you might end up using them all yourself!
